About this programme
This programme goes family by family through the additive package of a modern engine oil. For each one it covers the chemistry, the mechanism, typical treat levels and the limits set by emission systems and specifications.
We recommend completing UTR-101 first.
What you will be able to do
- Explain how detergents, dispersants, anti-wear agents and friction modifiers work
- Relate TBN, sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur to additive content
- Predict common synergies and antagonisms between additives
- Read an additive data sheet critically
Lessons
-
Detergents and dispersants
Metal sulphonates, phenates and salicylates; ashless succinimides.
-
Anti-wear and extreme-pressure additives
ZDDP, how its tribofilm forms, and why phosphorus is limited.
-
Friction modifiers
Organic and molybdenum-based friction modifiers and their effect on fuel economy.
-
Viscosity modifiers and pour point depressants
Polymer architecture, thickening efficiency and shear stability.
-
Antioxidants, corrosion inhibitors and antifoams
Protecting the oil itself and completing the package.
Who it is for
- Laboratory technicians and chemists
- Blending-plant and quality-control staff
- Technical sales engineers
Other programmes
- UTR-101 Fundamentals of Lubrication and Tribology Friction, wear, viscosity and base oils: the ground every lubricant professional stands on.
- UTR-150 Certified Product Advisor For workshop and sales staff: match the right additive to the problem and explain it honestly.
- UTR-240 Oil Analysis and Condition Monitoring Take a representative sample, understand the tests and read a laboratory report with confidence.
